Troubleshooting • Audio on rpi

Hello, I am relatively new to this scene and i am working on a rpi 4b retropie handheld setup, currently troubleshooting audio setup, which is to say it isn't working. I am using a PAM8302 amplifier and it is plugged into gpio18 for audio. I hear a faint sshhhh from the speaker but no real audio signal to speak of. It is potentially worth noting the speaker makes a *click* noise when turning it off. My retropie audio settings are as follows: system volume: 100%, audio card: default, audio device: analogue, enable navigation sounds: ON, enable video audio: ON, OMX player audio device: local. Here is the config.txt file

# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
