If the Pi on the back acts as the USB (or whatever) to HDMI adaptor then yes.Haven't you just described a display with a Pi stuck on the back? There is opportunity for maximising profit in having a modular system; a basic USB to HDMI module with button interface modules and whatever which can be stacked on top. Maybe a Wi-Fi or Ethernet module, even USB 3.0. It's up to the marketing department to figure out what users need, want and would like, for the product design team to turn that into something which will appeal, and the engineering department to make that a reality.
Much like a Chromecast, Miracast or similar dongle - You can plug that straight into the display's HDMI socket, connect it via a short HDMI extension cable, or via a long one, a very long one with active HDMI extenders. Some enterprising individuals may even figure out a way to fit one inside their display itself.
