I guess I'll retry once I upgrade to Trixie. The problem wasn't that the adaptor didn't work, more in configuring the OS for dual display and the desktop screwing things when I clicked icons.
Another part of the problem is how it was done is almost certainly not applicable to how it is now and, as I have stayed as far away as I can from video related things, don't understand half the jargon - eg 'fkms' versus 'kms' means nothing to me - I really need a complete 'how to' which works and they are thin on the ground.
I expect needing to run X-11 so I can RDP into the Pi may be something which adds complexity.
