Holding RUN in reset gives pretty good results, it appears. I collected a set of values to compare to my other data. RTC operating so about the same as Pico "sleep xosc" in the above. ....... The 2.4 mA "rest of the board stuff" may be a target for optimization.
Thanks for checking out independently the 'RUN in reset' current, and with those different powering methods too.
My 3.5mA included the permanently-on red LED on the 3V3 rail of RTC module, a few non-optimised pullup resistors and the CMOS (I think) 555 'inverter'. I had no sensors as such - I am just measuring an external battery voltage with pot-down resistors to a Pico ADC input.

My EEPROM gets filled up after 5 days so I'll optimise that first, then check if I need to tackle battery issues.
