that might be a batch issue!
Can only repeat again that I'm running WD and SanDisk NVMe - which all have SanDisk controllers - just fine on CM4IO baseboards. They don't have 32kHz clock there as well!
I assume it is a firmware issue as there are a couple SSDs with SanDisk controllers that do work. The "bad" firmware versions appear to be waiting for the optional clock as part of their initialisation sequence so don't power up properly.

Good luck working out what are the good combos of controller and firmware version though. It is easier to say not recommended...
so you think that these drives have a fixed BOM? What happens when the next batch of 'recommended' drives will be produced with the 'bad controller' firmware on the BOM?

Easier to add the clock would be my answer here.
