...well, wouldn't you know it, the rain didn't get in but the ants did. They like any place that is dry and dark, and found my enclosure suitable, just like my mailbox. I resorted to the same remedy as I did with the mailbox: apply a super-sticky layer of goop ("Tanglefoot" is one brand) around every possible path to ground (in this case the post plus the two cables). That will probably hold them off at least until it wears off, usually about a season or two.
