What would cause the drive to be installed with root permissions vs user permissions?
Again, it depends on what file system is in use.
Freshly formatted Linux native filesystems have the top level directory owned by root and with a group of root.
Non-Linux file systems don't do owner, group, and permissions so it depends on how you mount them.
Did I do something wrong when installing or is it a standard procedure that you need to change permissions?
Probably not but l can't be certain without knowing which file system you formatted it with.
