To capture in Python, try Picamera2. It's easier than it looks: see the examples in Chapter 2. First get it working with a free-running camera, before trying to combine it with the external trigger.
If you happen to be an OpenCV user: You can't use OpenCV's native VideoCapture class, but you can capture with Picamera2 and then process and display the images with OpenCV.
[Also, if I've remembered this correctly and am not confusing the HQ and GS cameras...] Note that the frame captured during trigger pulse n will be transmitted to the Pi during pulse n+1, and the Pi must be "listening" for frames before they arrive.
