"feels slower" is not definitive, especially for something that can be easily measured.
Can you run your test using the initramfs and then online and time them both to see whether what you're feeling is reality?
I would expect it to be a bit slower, on the order of 10-20%, perhaps, but my experience running dd in initramfs doesn't show it to be orders of magnitude slower.
