I've been using Bleak https://pypi.org/project/bleak/ to read broadcasts.
Range from Pi Zero W boards (in a plastic case) has been 10m+ through brick walls from Xiaomi temperature and humidity sensors.
The Pi 4 running this (under Bullseye) is in a metal rack-mounted case and only just gets to the sensor at the top of the rack (10cm)
I've only used this for reading so far (3 years IIRC) - not connecting / passing data though I do have an nRF board somewhere in the pile of opportunity to try.
