The biggest drawbacks of a third partition are:
  • If you write a new image to that drive you'll lose the third partition so you still have to backup your data (which you should be doing anyway).
Agree. If you install a new image this will wipe your third partition.

But if you have to restore a backup of the first two partitions because of some OS update or config problems - that's supported by raspiBackup. You can backup all partitions 1,2 and 3 and restore partitions 1 and 2 only.

There a lot of folks out there who use a third partition for any non OS stuff given the storage devices are quite huge (1TB for example) and only about 30GB is required for RaspianOS. raspiBackup will also save the third partition and you can restore only the RaspianOS partitions from a backup if needed.
