What is really the goal?

Usually, one does not care about the media itself. Everything is cheap these days and there is no point in crying over a defective SD card (or, for that matter, just about any other broken hardware). Usually, what we care about is the data/programs that are lost when media goes bad.

Here, it sounds like you've already gotten back up and running, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Is it really that you just don't want to throw that SD card into the trash?

Also, as a side note, I've had far more failures (with RPis) with putting stuff on USB (*) than I have with just leaving everything on the SD card. SD cards have actually been quite reliable in my experience.

(*) In particular, once I tried the effect of putting swap on a USB stick (a swap partition not a file). That ended badly...
