Linux is a proper server OS that happens to be co-optable as a usable desktop OS should you so want. On a server, you really, really don't want your hard disc to spin down (mostly), resulting in the next access taking anything up to ten seconds to execute, and that's assuming all the drives in the RAID array (you are using some sort of RAID, aren't you.) are started at the same time.
