You don't use X, and you're not using the framebuffer, so what are you using?

If your application is directly using the DRM/KMS APIs, then producing a memory version of the screen output is down to it. There are no backdoors in DRM to divert the composed output to memory, and the application needs to configure the writeback connector to produce the same output as the main screen.

Wayfire and labwc already provide options for screenshot as they control composition and onscreen rendering separately.
