If you want USB 3 communication, then you'll need the USB 3 pins as well. Essentially in order to maintain the overall socket and plug compatibility, USB 3 uses a second set of contacts behind the four USB 2 ones. If you plug a USB 3 device into a USB 2 socket, it'll drop to USB 2 mode, and similarly if you plug a USB 2 device into a USB 3 socket, it'll still work fine because it doesn't have anything to connect to the USB 3 contacts.
