I did not create an SD to boot from. My Pi's are all booted from USB.
I cannot see why that should make a difference. Maybe @aa789 did an SD boot and can tell.
But yes I did use the Raspberry issued imager. Latest version 1.8.5
And yes I did add the wifi settings to allow the machine to connect immediately. That doesn't work as expected.
Note again... it works ok using Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye, it doesn't work using Bookworm. This is for both with or without desktop environment.
