The Adafruit 2.8-inch PiTFT is an SPI display.
Stick with an SPI display as they require 4 GPIOs from the Pi, rather than the 20-28 GPIOs that a DPI display requires. If you don't then there will be insufficient GPIOs left to interface to the buttons.
In the instructions of the PiGrrl2, it is using the display's loop through for the GPIO header. There should be nothing stopping you using GeekPi extender instead, but do check the wiring carefully first.
